Well, it finally happened! After installing Football Manager 2014 on my laptop, the game decided to award my computer’s performance with one star and set the estimated game speed for my 4 default leagues (England, Germany, Spain and Italy) to half a star. I was shocked and scared and I didn’t want that to happen, so I have decided to give it a try and make Football Manager 2014 run faster. I am going to share my tips on how to do it below, so let’s check them out!

The golden rule of thumb when it comes to the game’s processing speed is that the more players you have, the slower the game will be. This means that you will have to compromise a little bit in order to get the results that you want. Here is what to do:

1. Reduce the number of playable leagues
You can simply cut them out one by one and see the estimated speed of your game go up. If you still want the leagues to be fully simulated (maybe you plan on managing there some day), you will still keep them selected, but before starting the game you select “View Only” for them.

2. Control what players to load
Ideally, we’ll want all the players in the world. The truth is though that most of them are really crappy players, so you won’t need them anyway. So after selecting the leagues, near the Database tab, go for the “Advanced Option”. Use those options to add more players based on the game you plan to play. You can add players from specific continents, countries and so on and add them based on reputation or other factors. This gives you more control over the players loaded and can potentially increase the processing speed in Football Manager 2014.

3. Set your preferences straight
Go to the Preferences tab and then Interface. From there, you could try to reduce the resolution (although it’s not really that big of a problem). What you want to have checked there is the “Use caching to decrease page loading times”. Have in mind that some add-ons will need that unchecked, though!

Finally, if you have problems with your match engine and your computer can’t handle processing them, go to the Match tab and adjust your selections: you can either go for “Recommended for this Computer” or simply lower the graphics quality until you get a decent performance. But before you do this, try to remove all the extras: sky, scenery, crowd, weather effects and so on as these also eat up a lot of memory and can make your game glitchy. If simply removing them doesn’t improve the quality of your game, then you have to reduce the graphics quality too.

I really hope that these tips and tricks will help you make Football Manager run faster so you can rush to get that title!
