Sega’s Mega Drive Console is kept in high regard by gamers all ages and there are many voices who ask for a new gaming console from the company. Although it appears this will never happen, at least Sega is seriously considering to let us taste a bit of that glorious past in a next-gen format.

In other words, the company announced the release of Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, a compilation of the best first-party games from the 16-bit era. As if that was not enough, bonus content from the Master System is announced (but we don’t know what to expect yet).

“Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection is a must-have for any Sega enthusiast,” commented Gary Knight, European Marketing Director for Sega Europe. “Fans will get a chance to relive fond memories from these classic games in HD format.”

We’re talking about 40 games in this collection, including Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2 and 3, Columns, Alien Storm, Ecco the Dolphin, Space Harrier and Streets of Rage 1, 2 and 3. The games have been reproduced to bring a new visual joy, including support for HD TVs. Doesn’t that sound great?
