Originally released in 2012, The Secret World was an MMORPG developed by Funcom, creators of Anarchy Online and Age of Conan, among other games. It was a pretty unique take on the genre, as the game took place in modern day times but with a twist – all conspiracies, legends, urban myths were true. This means that you weren’t fighting among orcs, elves, dwarves and the like – you were a member of a secret alliance like the Illuminati, the Templars, or the Dragons, fighting against eldritch abominations, ancient gods, and even zombies.
During its lifespan, the game enjoyed moderate success, with many players praising the game’s story and presentation. Major story missions played out through fully voiced cutscenes, much like a single player RPG epic. Quests will pretty interesting as well, with the highlight being the research missions. The Secret World sported an in-game browser that was almost a necessity because these research missions were based on actual myth and mythos from real life. Players needed to put on their thinking caps to solve these cryptic quests and it was an experience never before seen in an MMO.
Unfortunately, the game’s combat wasn’t received as well because of clunky controls and stiff animations. The game eventually had to drop the subscription fee and went “buy-to-play”. Fast forward to today, and while the game still has a cult following, players were dropping to critical levels. Funcom has decided to pull the plug on the original version of the game and relaunch it as Secret World Legends.
Secret World Legends will be completely free-to-play. It will retain the plot of the original game and expand on it with additional story missions. Combat is getting a complete overhaul, this time opting for reticle-based targeting and revamped class abilities. The leveling and progression systems are also getting changed.
The game has been in closed beta testing for some time now, but today Funcom has officially announced that the game will launch on June 26th. To any veterans of the game, will you be willing to start over for Legends? To new players, does the above trailer catch your eye? Stay tuned for more information as we get closer to launch date!
