GandalfWarner Bros. has announced a new, next-gen third-person Lord of the Rings action game, titled Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. The game will be developed by Monolith, the same studio behind Guardians of MIddle-Earth. It is set to be in development for the PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360.

The game will revolve around a ranger whose family was slain by Sauron’s armies. The main character gets killed himself, which allow for the  usage of “Wraith abilities” that will help him take on Mordor hordes. The story will mostly only feature the Rings of Power and will be completely separate from Lord of the Rings canon, but Warner has promised it will align in someway.

Warner’s Samantha Ryan briefly gave a synopsis for the game: “Players will explore the dark and very personal theme of vengeance in a world where decisions have a consequence, and those consequences persist even after death… The game introduces new gameplay mechanics to the action genre, creating opportunities for emergent and customized gameplay that will be rewarding for players.”

The new “nemesis” system was also mentioned, which will differentiate every enemy in the game according to strengths, weaknesses, and personality.

“Through the Nemesis System, enemy relationships and characteristics are shaped by player actions and decisions to create personal archenemies that remember and adapt to the player and are distinct to every gameplay session,” claims Warner’s press release. “Gamers are able to craft their own battles, enemies and rewards within the dynamic world that remembers and adapts to their choices, delivering a unique experience to every player.”

An official release window wasn’t confirmed.
