call-of-duty-modern-warfare2-xboxcoverActivision’s upcoming title in the Call of Duty franchise, Modern Warfare 2, had a few funny moments regarding it’s title. At first it was called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but then it remained only “Modern Warfare 2,” until now when the box covers are starting to get shipped and we can all see that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the final name.

Why all the trouble? Most likely because of a recent survey that showed some impressive results: about half of the gamers were not able to recognize Modern Warfare 2 because it lacked the Call of Duty logo. This would’ve meant far less sales for the title, so Activision had to quickly put their brand back on the box.

Of course, the official explanation is a bit different, as an Activision spokesperson told Kotaku:

“Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2 is the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. We have focused our attention on Modern Warfare in order to most effectively communicate the fact that this is the first true sequel in the Call of Duty series. Infinity Ward, the original creators of the Call of Duty franchise, has said from the beginning Modern Warfare 2 resides in the Call of Duty universe. This is reflected in the title’s package.”

Maybe Activision just tried to create a new franchise, a new brand with Modern Warfare, but realized it wasn’t possible – at least not with huge sales. But the truth… well, it’s out there and we’ll probably never find it out. One thing is clear: with or without Call of Duty on the box, Modern Warfare 2 will certainly rock the world!
