Subnautica is not just a game, it’s an experience. The underwater survival game is a complete wonder and is one of those games that will want to make you come back again, just to relive the experience.
The game’s premise describes your ship crashing into the alien ocean planet named 4546B after being hit by an intense beam weapon. Your objective in the game is to fix your ship by exploring the planet and trying to survive as your explore.
Where you crash in this game is decided randomly but the planet and resources remain the same meaning they are not generated randomly with any seed. A significant amount of time in the game will be spent with you being underwater, being an ocean planet and all.
Subhnautica does not let you deviate too much from its story line but no complaints there because the main story line is excellent by itself.
The mechanics of the game are also top notch with a great crafting engine to make your tools and also the game offers features like positional audio. These come in handy when you have to take on the different monsters lurking in the depths of the sea or listening to just move past them silently.
There aren’t many games like Subnautica that have a rich combination of such elements but we did find a few that can give a great experience, much like Subnautica.
No Man’s Sky
No Man’s Sky was released in 2016 by the developer Hello Games. Initially the game was hit by huge claims of false advertising.
The trailer of the game showcased an open alien world thriving with life and possibilities, but upon release players found that the world was in actuality completely devoid of life.
The game in general offered repetitive tasks and did not create much of a buzz.
The developers however pushed the game and then brought in all the changes that the fans wanted, making it now a game that we recommend highly.
If you picked this game up earlier then we suggest you revisit it now.
Space Engineers
Space Engineers is a game that had its initial release all the way back in 2013.In Space Engineer you play as a space engineer whose main objectives are to explore, find resources and then craft different things like spaceships and planetary outposts.
This game follows in the footsteps of Minecraft by making most of the items in the game destructible. There is a single player mode but the game gets more exciting in multiplayer mode.
Majority of the game focuses on the exploration aspects rather than the survival aspect.
The mechanics simulate things like inertia, mass, and force extremely well. You will have to take these forces into account as you build.
The Long Dark
The Long Dark is a survival game that was released in 2014 for Playstation and PC. The game puts you in the shoes of a pilot who crash lands in the northern part of Canada during a global disaster.
The game is simple in its approach and does not send crazy zombies or mutants after you. The game pits you purely against nature with the objective of surviving for the longest possible time.
In order to survive you have to keep a check on things like your body temperature and food levels. You will also have to be prepared to fend off wild animals using weapons that can be constructed using the tools found in the game.
The game has a raw style with no distracting frills added which makes for a great gaming experience. The game is released in chapters and as of now 3 of the five chapters have come out.
Abzu
Abzu much like Subnautica is an oceanic adventure game that focuses on exploring the expanse of the world rather than surviving.
In the game you play as an underwater diver whose main objective is to explore the depth of the sea and uncover its many mysteries. In this quest to explore the depths of the sea you will come face to face with many sea creatures, some friendly and others that are very dangerous.
The missions in the game are fairly simple and can be completed easily, but the major elements of the game are its enchanting environments, music, and the ambiance of the living ocean around you.
The game in general is short coming in at around 3 hours of play time.
Astroneer
Astroneer was released in 2019 with support for the Xbox one and PC, this game also comes under the open world explores games and feels more like a combination of Subnautica and No Man’s Sky.
In the game you play as a space explorer who is headed on a journey to the depths of space. Your main objective is to survive for as long as possible by utilizing resources to build bases and create vehicles.
The story does not offer much and is a bit lackluster in that regard. The game should be played for its open world experience.
The Forest
The Forest is another game that has a lot of critical acclaim. It was released in 2014 for the Playstation and windows platform.
The setup of the game is simple, You are the only survivor of a plane crash and now find yourself having to survive in The Forest.
The game in itself offers a survival centric gameplay with elements of exploration and crafting. You will find yourself in frequent battles with your enemies,or wild animals.
The only other humans you will find in the game are the cannibals and lets just say that they don’t make the best of friends.
