ndsKotaku reports that the Nintendo DS has crossed the threshold of 100 million units sold worldwide. This means that the little handheld from Nintendo is close to breaking the 119 million record of bestselling handheld, currently held by the Game Boy. After that, it is only the PlayStation 2 left to be defeated, but it’s probably going to be a tougher battle, since Sony’s console is still selling and it already has a bit over 150 million units sold.

The Nintendo Wii console is also selling very well, although not as fast as the DS – with almost 50 million units sold in three years. Although the numbers might not seem impressive, it’s worth noting that the console was out for less time and it costs almost double to purchase (and it will cost even more in the UK). Either way, the numbers are impressive for Nintendo.
