The expeditions will be unlocked once you reach level 5 and there are three types of things you can do: attack other civilizations, trade with other civilizations or exchange culture with other civilizations. Have in mind that each of these expeditions can fail (not only the Attack one!), so make sure that you have lots of bonuses from buildings within your own civilization before starting an expedition in City of Wonder!
Now let’s check out each type of expedition in the game and what does it mean. Let’s start with how to Explore (visiting other civilization you can conduct expeditions to):
Click the Expeditions Icon to go to the Map. There, you can hover the mouse over other civilizations and see some stats (wins and loses of that civ). You can click to explore the civilization (and see some extra options) or conduct a quick attack which, if successful, will give you extra population. If you click explore, you will have three options:
Attack in City of Wonder:
The results of an Attack are based on the Attack and Defense Points of you and your opponent, as well as your population amounts. Attack and Defense Points come mostly from Military Buildings, and some Marvels. Winning an Attack will earn you Population. Losing will take away a small amount of Silver Coins from your treasury.
Trade in City of Wonder:
The results of a Trade are based on the Trade Points of you and your opponent, as well as your population amounts. Trade Points come mostly from Economic Buildings like Markets and Goods Buildings, as well as certain Marvels. Winning a Trade will earn you Silver Coins. Losing will deduct a small amount of Silver Coins.
Cultural Exchange in City of Wonder:
The results of a Cultural Exchange are based on the Culture Points of you and your opponents, as well as your population amounts. Culture Points are largely derived from Cultural Buildings and Decorations, as well as certain Marvels. Winning a Cultural Exchange will earn you XP. Losing will deduct a small amount of Silver Coins.
There is a just a limited number of expeditions you can conduct per day, and the number is influenced by the boundaries of your own civilization. Also, if you have any dirty buildings, you can’t start any new expeditions!
In order to win your expeditions, it would be wise to focus building a civilization of a specific type: either military (focus on researching military technologies and build military structures), trading one or cultural. Trying to mix and match might be risky in the long term when you’ll meet focused civilizations.
