Minecraft screen shotMinecraft is coming out on PlayStation 3 this week, developer Mojang has announced.

The monumentally successful sandbox game will be coming out on Wednesday 18th December and will be known as Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition on Sony’s console.

Mojang’s Owen Hill, posting on the EU PlayStation Blog, also wrote that “Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition and Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition are also being developed but we don’t have release dates yet. Expect more news in the New Year.”

He noted that: “The PlayStation 3 Edition comes with everything present in other console versions. They’re pretty-much identical to play, and will be developed in tandem from now on.” He also confirmed that skin packs and texture packs will be released soon after the games release.

Mojang isn’t quite sure at the moment whether the PlayStation version will include Remote Play or compatibility with the PlayStation 4 or Vita versions, but will be updating when they do know.

Unfortunately, Hill admitted it was unlikely that Herobrine will feature in the PlayStation 3 Edition.

Across all platforms, Minecraft has sold more than 33 million copies. When you consider we’ve still got the PS3, PS4, Vita and Xbox One versions of the game to come out it really seems as though that number will rocket.

Will you be getting Minecraft when it comes out on Sony’s consoles? Have you yet to dip into the world of Minecraft? How much higher do you think the sales figures for the game will reach after all the upcoming versions are released?
