DayZ Standalone Is Not Such an Amazing Game, After All

Published

on

dayz standalone sucksFor a game that started its Alpha stage with 88,000 players in under 12 hours and for a game that’s constantly on top of Steam bestselling titles, you would expect DayZ to be THE game to play. I mean, why would millions of people play a crappy game – one that was already successful as a mod? It has to be great, right? Well… not so much!

I’ve decided to wait for the hype go down regarding DayZ and hear the unsatisfied voices, but they never came. So I decided to take some cash out of my real life pockets and get the virtual survival game, ready for a completely new experience compared to the mod DayZ and for some true survival action. The results? Not so impressive.

Since I don’t have any friends playing the game, I have joined a random server. For some reason, I never am able to find a really populated server with a latency lower than 100, so I got into the most popular at that time: 16 players giving it a go at survival. Number of players I met during the 68 minutes I’ve played the game? ZERO. Fun level? ZERO.

It was fun and “WTF” during my first try, though: as soon as I spawned, I saw some houses and headed towards them. Out of nowhere a zombie appeared and started going for my brains. Having nothing on me and realizing that my fate is doomed, I tried to Rocky his face to pieces, but failed. Game over after two or three minutes and time for a fresh start.

I should’ve stopped there and call it a great experience. When I started again, I found myself in a slightly larger area of houses that I considered to be the paradise for any looter. First three houses were empty and I couldn’t even open all the doors: the dressers seemed filled with clothes, but I couldn’t check them out. There were books and stuff near the bed, but I couldn’t interact with them.

Basically, DayZ Standalone is the same sad mod in which you don’t get to do ANYTHING. The fun part of survival: searching for items and finding all sorts of useless crap, as it would be the case in any real life apocalypse situation is completely missing. There are very few and very random items thrown away at random in the game (so I found some canned food in a barn and an axe in a bedroom) and they’re so limited that even a minimalist would cry. For a change, give Project Zomboid a try to feel the difference (it’s not multiplayer and plays in a different perspective, but still does the whole survival thing better)

And what saddened me the most is that there’s not much of a difference between the mod and the standalone game. Everything looks mostly the same, everything is mostly the same and if you are alone – like I was – everything is extremely boring. After my bad luck with the first try that got me killed in just a couple of minutes, second try had me looking and begging for zombies for more than 30 minutes – enough time to get me “awesome” loot after searching through a million and a half empty houses: an axe, some gloves, a jacket, some bandages, a screwdriver to open my canned food and a biker’s helmet that was, just like all biker helmets, in another barn.

I was thirsty for most of the time and the area I visited had just one fountain I could drink water from. This despite the fact that all houses had sinks (which, OK, might not work after a while during the apocalypse). But sinks AND having a fountain outside makes no sense. Just like many other things in DayZ Standalone. But it’s a game, after all!

Well, apparently not, because most of the people I hear praise it for how realistic it is. No, it’s not realistic at all. It’s boring if you are alone, like me. There was no fear that there’s a zombie after a corner, there was no fear that my character might die, I mostly couldn’t even prepare for anything as zombies seemed to appear out of nowhere, ready to taste the metal of my axe in some really crappy melee.

And my 68 minutes of supreme boredom made me understand that DayZ Standalone is not an amazing game, not at all. However, it can be amazing. Not as a game per se, because all the things it’s lacking are making it terrible (I know it’s an alpha, but it still doesn’t look much different than the mod). However, what makes DayZ Standalone amazing is the community. The players, the people who play the game.

I had so much fun in other instances playing on servers with a ton of people, meeting the crazy bandints, meeting the funny scared rabbits who had no equipment and kept running, meeting the bands of survivors that were trying to have fun on their own. That’s what makes DayZ Standalone so fun. Not the zombies, not the “survival” not anything else. The players.

So if you really want to experience anything but a terrible game, make sure that you join a populated server and that you’re not alone. Otherwise boredom will kill you faster than the zombies.

I’ve seen some streams a week ago and the game seems boring… It’s jsut like Elder Scrolls Online, huge hype for a famous franchise but then the expectations do not correspond to the final product.

I played only a bit of Day Z the mod
from my experience, i don’t really find the community good, or even mature
mostly it seems that a lot of console community migrated to pc
well, there was one time, when i found a Lee Enfield
well, and basically i was killed for it, the one that killed me, came up to me, and called me a “f**** cu**”

Wow, so lets go trough this once again, you bought an very early alpha game that even thee developers say not to buy at the moment, and you reviewed it like a full release game? These reviewers keep getting better and better.

This was not a review. It was an opinion article which is completely allowed here on Earth, especially since there are thousands of articles praising the same alpha version of the same game. Should only the positive opinions be accepted?

I hope rocket goes through this and picks up a couple of these things.
I think you’re making a couple of good points about for example
the helmets, lack of interaction (why is there a lot of stuff you cant interact with while its for example “a book”), the dressers (this is where logically most clothes should spawn), redundancy of fountains and sinks, and that the map is still 90% the same as dayz mod.
On the other side you should consider this is an pre alpha with good latency servers (if you’re not in the middle of nowhere with a bad ISP), workable melee system and great potential of fun ( if you invest the time to get friends and learn the quirks).

ps, i hope one day there wont be any quirks left in dayz

Besides these points I love the game because of the player interactions and the intensity of them. This is the only game that really gives me an adrenaline rush.

That’s what I said, but apparently not everybody bothers to read to the end. It’s a game that’s great to play with other players. The interactions are what make it so great, the randomness of people you meet. Add to that extra survival options – I saw that hunting is being prepared to be introduced in the game – and you get everything to a new level.

I can’t speak for your experience on the server you joined or the list of available servers. But from my experience in Australia , There is atleast 50 servers available and they all have less than 100ms ping. The game is Alpha and that should be kept in mind , IT IS BUGGY!

The overall experience I’ve had has been a 7/10 , and thats pretty good for a game early in development.

The fact that the developers are listening to the community and not adding microtransactions or having safezones is what makes the game true to a survival horror.

This game is not a money grab similiar to War Z or other games that have come along.

If your someone who wants a final polished product , avoid the game otherwise give it it go!

definately should wait for the full release. but even then, at this current pace it will be so outdated its not funny.
mates and i went back to the arma2 mod of dayz, more fun established and better equipment options.

The game sucks. It’s optimized so poorly that even people with high pc specs are getting frustrated at their 20 fps in cities.

I just spent an hour running to balota to loot the base there, but come to find out they removed it.

The spawns are terrible, you literally have to run for hours to get any good loot, and chances are the loot is already taken and since the spawn system is so messed up there’s little chance that it will spawn back.

Server hopping gets you penalized, I mean who wants to get all of their gear removed after you just spend 2 hours getting somewhere where good loot is suppose to be.
If you enjoy collecting hats and useless loot for hours on end, I recommend you buy this game. If you’re looking for some fun action, I suggest playing the mod. I know it’s still an alpha, but all of the “fixes” they keep rolling out with just make the game more difficult to play.

I don’t think I’ll ever buy another Bohemia game. Until they fix their game engines.

Guess what, it’s now a year later and the game still sucks. It’s doomed because it’s on a failed engine, Rocket has pocketed dough and jet, and the community is discussing POOPING FOR GOD SAKES. They are considering dumb things like adding taking a crap in the game. The whole project is indeed rudderless, fix the engine, add zombies, and focus on the core of the game for peat sakes!

2. Building the Perfect PC Gaming Setup

2.1 Core Hardware Components

Building a capable gaming PC requires understanding the essential components that work together to deliver smooth, immersive experiences.

CPU (Processor) – The processor serves as your system’s brain, executing game logic and managing background tasks. Modern gaming demands multi-core CPUs that can handle parallel processing efficiently. While older games relied primarily on single-core performance, today’s titles take full advantage of 6, 8, or even 16 cores. Investing in a modern CPU ensures your system can handle not just current games, but upcoming titles as well.

GPU (Graphics Card) – Your graphics card is the heart of gaming performance. Modern GPUs do far more than render frames—they support advanced features like real-time ray tracing for realistic lighting and reflections, AI-powered upscaling technologies, and complex shader effects. The GPU market offers options ranging from budget-friendly cards for 1080p gaming to powerhouse models capable of driving 4K displays at high refresh rates.

RAM – Memory requirements have steadily increased over the years. While 8GB was once adequate, 16GB or more is now recommended for smooth gameplay in modern titles. Sufficient RAM prevents stuttering, allows for faster asset loading, and enables comfortable multitasking between games and other applications like Discord or streaming software.

Storage – Solid State Drives (SSDs) have become essential for modern gaming. The benefits extend beyond faster boot times—SSDs dramatically reduce game loading screens, enable quick-travel features in open-world games, and minimize texture pop-in. Many recent titles specifically recommend or require SSDs to deliver the intended experience. NVMe drives offer even faster performance than traditional SATA SSDs, though both represent massive improvements over mechanical hard drives.

Cooling System & PSU – These often-overlooked components are critical for system stability and longevity. Adequate cooling prevents thermal throttling that can reduce performance during extended gaming sessions. A quality power supply unit ensures stable power delivery to all components, protects against electrical issues, and provides headroom for future upgrades. Investing in reliable cooling and power solutions safeguards your entire system investment.

2.2 Peripherals & Accessories for Competitive / Comfortable Play

The components inside your PC are only part of the equation. Your peripherals directly influence both your performance and comfort during gameplay.

Keyboard – Mechanical keyboards have become the gold standard for gaming, offering responsive, tactile feedback that enhances both typing and gaming experiences. Different mechanical switch types cater to various preferences, from clicky and tactile to smooth and linear. Programmable keys allow you to execute complex in-game actions with single keystrokes, providing a competitive advantage.

Mouse – Gaming mice feature high-DPI sensors that track movement with precision, low-latency connections that eliminate input delay, and ergonomic designs that reduce hand fatigue. For first-person shooters and competitive games, a quality mouse is absolutely essential. The difference between a budget mouse and a proper gaming mouse becomes immediately apparent when precise aiming matters.

Monitor – High refresh rate displays, typically 144Hz or higher, deliver dramatically smoother visuals compared to traditional 60Hz screens. The difference is particularly noticeable in fast-paced games where every frame matters. Modern gaming monitors also feature technologies like G-Sync or FreeSync that eliminate screen tearing, creating a seamless visual experience.

Headset / Audio – Quality audio provides immersive soundscapes that enhance the gaming experience and offer competitive advantages. Spatial sound allows you to pinpoint enemy positions in shooters, hear approaching threats in survival games, and fully appreciate the atmospheric design of story-driven titles. Whether you choose a dedicated gaming headset or high-quality headphones with a separate microphone, good audio is an investment in both immersion and performance.

Customization – Modern gaming setups embrace personalization through RGB lighting that creates ambiance, macro keys that streamline gameplay, and ergonomic considerations like adjustable desks and supportive gaming chairs. Comfort during long gaming sessions isn’t luxury—it’s essential for maintaining focus and preventing physical strain.

2.3 Software & Optimization Best Practices

Even the most powerful hardware won’t perform optimally without proper software maintenance and optimization.

Keep drivers updated – Graphics drivers in particular receive regular updates that improve game performance, add support for new titles, and fix bugs. Similarly, chipset and peripheral drivers ensure all components communicate efficiently. Many manufacturers offer utilities that automate driver updates, making this process painless.

Use OS/game modes to optimize performance – Windows Game Mode, for example, prioritizes system resources for your active game. Many games also include built-in optimization tools that automatically configure graphics settings based on your hardware. Graphics software from NVIDIA and AMD provide game-specific optimizations and performance overlays.

Regular maintenance – Physical and digital maintenance keeps your system running smoothly. Clean dust from intake fans and heatsinks regularly to maintain optimal cooling. Monitor temperatures using software utilities to catch potential issues early. Run benchmark tests periodically to ensure you’re getting expected performance levels. These simple practices prevent many common issues before they impact your gaming.

Backup saves/data before major updates – Game updates, driver installations, and OS upgrades occasionally cause issues. Backing up save files and important data protects against the rare but frustrating possibility of data loss. Cloud save features offered by platforms like Steam provide automatic protection, but local backups offer additional security.

2.4 Comfort, Aesthetics & Sustainability Considerations

A truly great gaming setup balances performance with comfort, visual appeal, and responsible practices.

Desk / chair posture, cable management – Ergonomic furniture prevents long-term health issues. Your monitor should be at eye level, your chair should support your lower back, and your desk height should allow your arms to rest comfortably. Clean cable management isn’t just aesthetic—it improves airflow, prevents accidental disconnections, and makes maintenance easier.

Lighting / ambient setup for focus – Proper lighting reduces eye strain during extended sessions. Bias lighting behind monitors, ambient room lighting, and even RGB lighting can create an environment conducive to focused gaming. Some gamers prefer darker environments for immersion, while others find moderate lighting reduces fatigue.

Energy-efficient components & eco-friendly habits – Modern components offer impressive efficiency, but responsible usage matters too. Switching off unnecessary RGB lighting when not needed reduces power consumption. Properly recycling old hardware keeps electronic waste out of landfills. Enabling power-saving features when gaming performance isn’t critical helps reduce your environmental footprint without sacrificing your experience when it matters.

3. Community, Esports & Social Side of PC Gaming

PC gaming has always had a social dimension, but modern platforms have elevated community interaction to new heights.

Eurogamersonline.com fosters vibrant communities through dedicated forums where gamers discuss strategies, troubleshoot technical issues, and share experiences. The platform facilitates discussions about hardware recommendations, modding tips, and game discoveries. These community features transform gaming from a solitary hobby into a shared passion where knowledge flows freely and friendships form naturally.

Platforms like Eurogamersonline.com connect fans with players through coverage of major tournaments, player spotlights, team news, and competitive scene analysis. Whether you’re an aspiring competitor or an enthusiastic spectator, the esports ecosystem offers endless engagement opportunities.

The benefits of community involvement extend beyond entertainment. Learning from experienced players accelerates your improvement. Collaborating on projects like mods or community events enriches the gaming experience. Discovering new games, hardware recommendations, and optimization techniques through community sharing keeps you informed. Staying updated on industry trends, upcoming releases, and technical developments becomes effortless when you’re connected to an active gaming community.

4. Future Trends Driving PC Gaming (As Highlighted by Eurogamersonline.com)

The PC gaming landscape continues evolving at a remarkable pace, with several key trends reshaping what’s possible.

AI & Machine Learning – Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing game design through dynamic game worlds that respond intelligently to player actions, adaptive difficulty systems that maintain optimal challenge levels, and personalized experiences that cater to individual play styles. AI-powered technologies like DLSS already enhance performance by intelligently upscaling graphics, and future applications promise even more dramatic improvements in both visual quality and gameplay depth.

Cloud Gaming & Cross-Platform Integration – Cloud gaming services eliminate the need for expensive hardware by streaming games from remote servers to virtually any device. This technology enables gaming on tablets, laptops, or even smartphones with the quality previously requiring dedicated gaming PCs. Cross-platform integration breaks down barriers between PC, console, and mobile gaming, allowing friends to play together regardless of their chosen platform. This flexibility represents a fundamental shift in how and where gaming happens.

VR / AR and Immersive Gaming – Virtual reality and augmented reality continue pushing the boundaries of immersion. Modern VR headsets offer increasingly affordable entry points into fully immersive gaming worlds. Motion-tracking setups enable physical interaction with virtual environments. As the technology matures, standalone VR systems and mixed reality experiences promise to make immersive gaming more accessible and compelling than ever.

What do these trends mean for the average gamer? Greater accessibility allows more people to experience high-quality gaming regardless of their hardware budget. Better experiences emerge from technologies that enhance both visual quality and gameplay innovation. Lower barriers to entry mean you don’t necessarily need a top-tier gaming PC to enjoy modern titles. However, adapting to these trends requires staying informed and understanding how to leverage new technologies effectively.

Stay curious about emerging technologies and trends. Engage with communities to share knowledge and experiences. Most importantly, enjoy gaming responsibly—maintaining healthy habits, balancing gaming with other life activities, and approaching this hobby with perspective.

The outlook for PC gaming is extraordinarily bright. Evolving technologies like AI, cloud gaming, and VR promise to make gaming more accessible, more immersive, and more versatile than ever before. Hardware continues advancing at a remarkable pace, new game designs push creative boundaries, and the global gaming community grows stronger each year. Whatever your interests within gaming—competitive esports, story-driven adventures, creative building games, or social experiences—the PC gaming ecosystem offers limitless possibilities for engagement and enjoyment.

8. FAQs / Key Takeaways

What hardware specs are good for gaming in 2025?

A solid mid-range gaming PC in 2025 should include at least a 6-core modern processor, 16GB of RAM, a current-generation mid-tier graphics card, and an SSD for your operating system and frequently played games. This configuration handles most games at 1080p or 1440p with high settings. Higher-end builds with 8+ core CPUs, 32GB RAM, and flagship GPUs enable 4K gaming and future-proofing.

Is a high-end GPU always necessary?

Not at all. While flagship graphics cards offer the best performance, mid-range GPUs provide excellent gaming experiences at lower resolutions and settings. Many gamers find that mid-tier cards offer the best value, delivering solid performance without breaking the budget. Your target resolution and desired settings should guide your GPU choice more than the desire for the absolute best.

Can I get a decent gaming experience with a mid-range setup + cloud gaming?

Absolutely. A modest local setup paired with cloud gaming services provides remarkable flexibility. You can play less demanding titles or older games locally while streaming cutting-edge AAA games through cloud services. This hybrid approach maximizes value, allowing you to enjoy a broad gaming library without constant hardware upgrades. However, reliable high-speed internet is essential for optimal cloud gaming performance.

How important is community and social interaction in gaming?

Community has become central to modern gaming experiences. Beyond the obvious social benefits of playing with friends, gaming communities provide learning opportunities, troubleshooting help, game recommendations, and a sense of belonging. Many gamers find that community involvement enhances their enjoyment as much as the games themselves. Whether you’re seeking competitive teammates, creative collaborators, or simply people who share your interests, gaming communities offer valuable connections.

What future gaming trends should I be ready for?

Keep an eye on AI integration that personalizes gaming experiences, cloud gaming that separates games from hardware requirements, cross-platform play that unites gaming communities across devices, VR/AR technologies that redefine immersion, and continued graphics innovations that push visual boundaries. You don’t need to adopt every trend immediately, but awareness helps you make informed decisions about when and how to integrate new technologies into your gaming setup.

Horse Racing Games For iOS

Horse racing is a globally spread sport with billions of fans worldwide. The thrills of the races and the excitement of the betting make horse racing quite popular among adrenaline rush seekers.

However, unlike other sports like football or basketball that you can actually try in your backyard, becoming a racehorse rider is out of reach for most people. But all hope for our fellow race lovers is not lost and the gaming world comes to the rescue.

We are talking about horse racing simulation games where you can pick or breed your own horse, participate in online racing tournaments, earn prestige, take care of your horse, and much more.

Horse racing video games are perfect when it comes to getting the bigger picture of the sport and familiarizing yourself with other aspects apart from racing, like stable management, breeding, and finance management.

On top of that, horse racing video games can help you understand how the sport works, which may help you with the next bet you make on TwinSpires.

Fortunately, there are plenty of horse racing games for iOS, and in today’s article, we will highlight some of the best that you should try.

Rival Stars Horse Racing

This is a game made by a legendary horse race video game developer called PikPok and it is without a doubt one of the best horse racing games available for iOS right now.

The graphics look incredible for a mobile game. They are quite realistic, and the horse movement and the design of the tracks also give you the feel that you are participating in a real-world race.

Rival Stars Horse Racing has quite a fast pace, where you can complete some quests and upgrade your stable, but the focus is on the races, as it should be.

When we talk about the racing part of the game, every racetrack that you unlock offers something new. You get to race at different lengths and surfaces. But let’s focus on the important part, race mechanics.

You can steer the horse, brake, and activate their sprint ability. The horse’s performance is based on multiple factors such as ground consistency, position, race length, previous races, and much more.

Rival Stars Horse Racing also has a quite good breeding, training, and managing system. On top of that, there are many different horse coat colors and breeds. Unlike other games like Zelda where you can get a gold horse, Rival Stars Horse Racing focuses on realism. All of the horses have natural coat colors and traits.

You get to collect or breed horses, transform foals to feed, and upgrade facilities to unlock more options to progress.

The only thing that is missing from the game is the audience on the races since the race courses feel a bit empty with nobody around.

Horse Racing Manager 2024

This is a game that has a rather different approach than Rival Stars Horse Racing. It is focused more on the managing part of horse racing rather than on the actual gameplay and racing. You are in control of your business operation and your goal is to succeed in the world of horse racing and earn money.

You don’t have an impact on the races, and you cannot control your horse. The races are simulated, and the outcome depends on your horse’s stats and abilities.

That’s why horse training, and breeding a champion horse play a really important role in the game.

The best thing about Horse Racing Manager 2024 is the ability to race online. There are live PVP races that occur every 5 minutes and everyone can participate in them.

This is the perfect game if you want to learn what’s happening behind the curtains of horse racing as a sport. You are in control of your breeding rights that you can sell, as well as the age and career path of your horse.

It is an interesting game, especially for those who are not afraid of data and analysis.

iHorse Racing

This is a similar game to Rival Stars Horse Racing but with worse graphics, and fewer options. This game has multiple features like horse training, stable management, horse auction, race entries, CLU-jockey hiring system, and world jockey ranking, and you can connect your Facebook profile to invite friends.

To be honest, the graphics and gameplay of the game are fun and engaging, but I’d still go for Rival Stars Horse Racing, especially if you like a more realistic horse racing game.

Pocket Stables

Let’s drop down all the realism and focus on some retro 2D gameplay. For all retro game lovers who have a passion for horse racing, Pocket Stables is just the perfect game. At first glance, this game might look simple, but it actually has many features that make it even more fun.

For starters, you can build training facilities where you can increase your horse’s stats. Additionally, not all horses are the same and your goal should be to find a horse with the right balance of speed, stamina, and intensity.

As you win races, you’ll receive prizes, that can be used to upgrade your stable and give you better ways to breed a faster horse.

It’s fun, casual, and quite cute. Plus, you get to build your horse racing community and hire people that will take care of your stable.
