command-and-conquer-facebookNow this is some news hardcore real time strategy fans might not like: Command & Conquer might become a Facebook social strategy game sometime in the near future, according to Jon Van Caneghem, the one in charge of the Command & Conquer franchise at Electronic Arts. And it might just be the best thing to do in a computer games world dominated by online play and multiplayer…

Speaking with Gamasutra, Van Caneghem said about the possibility of taking C&C online:

“It allows you to do everything you would have expected from a boxed game, but it adds a lot more to it… being connected and connected with players, and persistence, the social elements of playing against each other with other friends.”

He added: “What you’re seeing with all the social gamers on Facebook… they are actually already playing strategy games whether they know it or not. Taking a franchise like Command and Conquer and expanding it to a wider audience is part of the strategy.”

And they wouldn’t be the first to do so! The Civilization franchise will also take a step towards social gaming on Facebook, with Civilization Network announced. And yes, this might just be the perfect step for such a well known franchise, don’t you think?
