Games of the Year 2008

5. Fable II

05-fable2The original Fable was an impressive title and few believed that the sequel can build on its success and bring innovation to the genre any further. But Peter Molyneux and his team wanted to prove us wrong and delivered a complete, complex game with Fable II, a pure RPG in which you feel you have complete control instead of following a preset path. Most of the things present in the Fable II universe, from family to character morphing, from the dynamic world to the co-op mode, should be used as inspiration by all upcoming role playing games!

4. LittleBigPlanet

04-lbpAlthough not as successful as most people had expected (at least sales-wise), LittleBigPlanet remains one of the best games available for Sony’s console and the biggest and best game when it comes to user generated content. Not only that Media Molecule’s game brings a true platformer feeling to our consoles, but it also delivers lifelike physics to complete the experience and amaze us. Unfortunately for Sony, LBP was not the console-seller the company was expecting…

3. King’s Bounty: The Legend

03-kings-bountyThis game came out of nowhere with bags of quality and potential, just to sink into the unknown because of no marketing campaigns. And it is unfortunate to see that such a high quality game goes unnoticed while other much worse titles get ten times more coverage (and, probably, sales). Still, King’s Bounty: The Legend remains the best strategy game of the year and one of the best titles to be released in 2008. A huge surprise overall and a title you simply must play!

2. Grand Theft Auto IV

02-gta4By far the most anticipated game of the year and certainly one of the few games released in 2008 to enter the history books for real, Rockstar’s GTA IV is considered by many the best game of the year, but we still believe it lacks the touch of gold to turn it into a winner. Don’t get us wrong – the title is solid, complex and extremely well done and you will not regret a single penny you’ll spend on purchasing it, but it just happened we received more this year from another title… Tough luck!

1. Fallout 3

01-fallout3Few people (including us) had expected Fallout 3 to be such a successful and high quality game, especially because it was so different compared to the previous two iterations in the series. However, Bethesda proved that it’s not always a sign of madness to risk and bring gamers something completely new: they did not fail with changing Fallout’s mechanics, they did not fail with creating the ultimate post-apocalyptic settings, they did not fail at delivering us the perfect game. That’s why we consider Fallout 3 the best game of 2008!
