Games of the Year 2008
After 12 months of playing and enjoying as many games as possible, it’s time to take a break, look back and choose the best of the best – the best 10 games of the year 2008. As you can imagine, it’s a really tough mission, especially because the overall quality of the games released this year was pretty high (there were exceptions, of course), but we must choose the game of the year here, at the Unigamesity! Without further ado, here are the best games of the year:
10. Braid
You can rarely see an indie game’s name in a GoTY list, but Braid totally deserves its place here. A pure platformer title that does everything flawlessly, a game that continues to amaze from start to finish, a puzzle that allows you to control time, a complex title that can be enjoyed by both old veteran gamers, as well as newcomers.
9. Boom Blox
Boom Blox, a game created by Steven Spielberg and Electronic Arts, is the single Wii title in the list and certainly the best Wii game of the year. A game that probably fits best into the Puzzle genre (but it’s more than that since quick thinking and dexterity are also required), Boom Blox is clearly a fun title to play together with other family members, a title both youngsters and more mature players will enjoy.
8. Metal Gear Solid 4
The best action game for the PlayStation 3 in our opinion, Metal Gear Solid 4 is only number eight because it failed to bring players a longer game experience and it went, instead, for lengthier cutscenes. However, Konami’s title is a real work of art, from visuals to gameplay and beyond. A true, complete gaming experience for all PS3 owners!
7. Gears of War 2
Now we switch consoles and move to the Xbox 360 to notice the high quality of Epic’s Gears of War 2, a game that took visuals to a whole new level, setting a new benchmark in the industry. Add to that a good plot, an impressive multiplayer mode and an awesome Horde Mode and you’ll have the full receipt for one of the best shooters available on Xbox 360s.
6. Left 4 Dead
Valve is one of those companies which seem to know everything there is to know about a specific genre – first person shooters in our case. With Left 4 Dead, Valve brought the ultimate co-op game, the title where individual skills matter less than teamwork, where your teammates’ lives matter just as much as yours. A game that will be played with the same passion 10 years from now, just as it happens with Counter Strike today!
