Dragon Age 3: Possible Companions Preview
Bioware has confirmed two weeks ago that new information about Dragon Age III will be released on the upcoming E3 in June. Possibly, the game will be finally unveiled and more concrete information will be released. One of the big mysteries remaining about the third Dragon Age is exactly about the playable companions. Leaked images from last year indicate that as in the last two games, the tendency of introducing new companions every game will continue, however it’s not a confirmation yet, it’s just a mere speculation with high possibilities to become real. Supposedly those images come from a user survey about the game but what sense would it make to place historical NPC’s in a game’s survey? Now, if those images were actually playable characters, then it would be definitely relevant to the survey and that’s exactly what makes me confident that those same images correspond to the intended eight companions for Dragon Age III. There’s another fact, there’s eight characters in this leak and eight is the number of existent companions in Dragon Age I and II.
Many fan discussions predict that those eight characters will be very disruptive between each other, as it also happened in the previous games. Meeting antagonistic stories that will simply shock with other characters will be nothing more than unavoidably; there will surely be a new rivalry duel such as Alistair/Morrigan and Anders/Fenris for the third game.
Theoretically we don’t have any names, classes, origins or stories but we do have their appearance, which can speak for itself in many ways. So, what can be clearly deduced from those images?
Races: Humans will Dominate Once Again
For certainly there are five humans in this batch of images (1, 2, 3, 5, 7), however number five is quite unclear, as we are not able to see his ears but I think it’s an elf, he is very tall and slim, which can indicate he is not human. Finally, there’s a dwarf, a female elf and no qunari characters.
- Classes: A New Class/Role Incoming?
Unless dagger rogues have a new type of weapon, they are not present in this group. There is a templar (1), a warrior (5) and an archer (9) for sure. Then we have three mages (2, 4, 6), including a mage dwarf, which is quite rare. Lastly, we have two characters with no weapons and with fancy costumes (3, 7), which makes me think there’s either a new class in Dragon Age III or they have a totally new role in game. As far as I know, players will be able to possess and manage castles in this third game; perhaps they are some kind of diplomats that will help the inquisitor to solve bureaucracies in a land troubled by war. Those characters will most likely work as advisors in the upcoming non-linear story.
Friendship and Rivalry
Number One: This knight seems quite experienced and honorable; he is probably one of those who seek balance between the Templar and the Mage orders. He doesn’t seem radical or extreme in ideals; he may be a little like Aveline, he’ll be the middle term of the part by trying to protect everyone as good as he can.
Number Two and Six: Brothers? Aren’t they? They dress similar, it can’t be a coincidence, however it seems to me that one is human and the other is an elf. I expect a very exciting and thrilling story about those two characters. As formal mages, they will surely fight every templar that tries to take away their freedom.
Number Four: There is surely a surprising story behind this dwarven mage, from the previous games we got to know that is extremely rare and hard to find one, especially at the surface. His clothes, well-crafted and refined, indicate that he comes from a rich and powerful family.
Number Five: This warrior female seems beastly and very deadly, she doesn’t seem to fear anything or anyone, I’m quite sure she defends the templars with all her soul and body. She will most likely argue and criticize every mage around, including the ones fighting with the inquisitor.
Number Eight: I’m not sure what can this elf girl story be, elves in Dragon Age normally come into the scene by random encounters, like it happened with Zevran and Fenris. It could be anything at all.
It’s very easily to predict the love romance options in this group, we can automatically exclude the dwarf (4), they’re never a possible choice in the series, just remember Oghren and Varric. Number one seems quite mature and as it’s well known that older characters are also never an option. Examples: Wynne and Aveline. And if we exclude the diplomats (3, 7), we get the four romance options that are available in every game. Everything seems to match correctly. So we have number two and six as male romance options and number five and eight as female ones. Once again, if you take a closer look, there is one friendly looking and one rivalry looking in each genre too.
