Details on ‘The Evil Within’ (‘Zwei’) Emerge

Shinji Mikami, creator of the Resident Evil franchise recently left the series’ studio open his own Tango Gameowrks. In doing so, he stated ‘I’ve found my focus and once again I’m striving for pure survival horror. I am being very hands-on to see that the quality is there. Rest assured.’ Considering the direction Resident Evil has been headed in recent times, it’s was most likely for the best that he sought as much.

The new studio’s first game has only been called in passing as Zwei, until an official teaser for the game was shown this morning (19 April), revealing, among a series of images depicting grotesque creatures and high-octane nightmare fuel, that this upcoming project is now called, officially, The Evil Within. In seeking to return to his roots as a survival horror developer, Mikami stated ‘We’re incredibly proud to announce The Evil Within. My team and I are committed to creating an exciting new franchise, providing fans the perfect blend of horror and action.’ On the subsequently created Facebook page, Mikami has apparently dedicated himself with directing the project in an effort to truly embody ‘pure survival horror’ which comes as a relief to many fans of his older work, unhappy with the action-oriented direction of Resident Evil series at present.

Tango Gameworks was initially founded in 2010, and was soon thereafter acquired by ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks; The Evil Within has been confirmed for a 2014 release date, and will be available on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows PC and ‘next gen consoles.’
